WeeShire Mains Expands Blueberry Dreams

(Western Nebraska Observer – October 2025)
Here at WeeShire Mains, we’ve always believed in growing more than just plants — we believe in growing possibility. So when the Western Nebraska Observer published the article “WeeShire Mains Expands Blueberry Dreams Added Due to Popular Demand,” it felt like someone finally captured that vision on paper.

According to the article, our farm recently received a $5,000 LB840 grant, plus two separate USDA Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) grants. One will help us expand our blueberry patch to 30 rows (900 bushes!), the other will fund low tunnels so the bushes can survive our Nebraska winters.

We’re prepping soil, mixing wood chips and peat moss to get the perfect acidic balance (because yes — blueberries are finicky!). While the article mentioned planting this fall, that’s not the plan. We’re doing the prep work now so we can plant in the spring, when the bushes have a real chance to root and thrive.

Right now, we only have low-tunnel funding for 8 of the planned 30 rows, so the priority is groundwork, layout, and infrastructure before any additional plants go in the soil.

And why? Because we want more than just a crop. We’re planning a “U-Pick” blueberry patch that becomes an experience: families harvesting fruit, kids learning agriculture, and all of us exploring sensory fun together. It’s about inclusion, it’s about community, and it’s about creating something rooted in this soil and in this mission.

So yeah — we’re excited, humbled, and a little exhilarated. Because growing blueberries is now also a way for us to grow community, awareness, and the kind of hands-on experiences we believe in.

Thank you to everyone who supports this journey: volunteers, donors, funders, families, and yes — every blueberry bush that will someday be ripe and ready.
