Local Visionaries grow Autism-Friendly Farm into Year-Round Family Haven

(Sun-Telegraph – September 2025)
In the heart of Kimball, Nebraska, a unique blend of farm fun and community support is taking root at WeeShire Mains. What began as a deeply personal project for the Shropshire family has blossomed into a nurturing and sensory-friendly space for families navigating the challenges of autism and other needs.

The journey started when the Shropshires, after countless hours spent traveling to therapy sessions and doctor visits, realized the powerful impact that calm settings and simple, engaging activities could have on their sons. A physical therapist suggested that many of these sensory activities could be done right at home, sparking the idea of transforming their property into a haven for healing and connection.

Today, WeeShire Mains offers a sanctuary where nature and animals bring peace, connection, and joy to families of all kinds. With the support of the Kimball City Council's Keno funds, the farm has made significant improvements, including repairs to animal enclosures, the addition of a new chicken coop, and the development of a blueberry expansion field set to offer a U-Pick experience in 2026.

The upcoming "Barnyard and Badges" fundraiser on September 27, 2025, aims to further these efforts by splitting proceeds between enhancements at the farm and technology upgrades for the Kimball Police Department. This event exemplifies the power of community collaboration in creating spaces that nurture and support.
